BerendBlokje: Uithof Postcard
Last summer, under the name `Berend Blokje,’ I released a LEGO set of the Utrecht skyline. Because I received such positive reactions, I started working on a new project: a set of De Uithof (or Utrecht Science Park, that name never really stuck).
I work at De Uithof, and I’m constantly told that the university buildings in the city center are much more beautiful. That may be true, but if you take a good look around the campus, you’ll find a wide variety of buildings that are, at the very least, quite striking. Much more fun to recreate than those historic buildings downtown.
The set includes a micro-scale version of, among other things, the sober yet somehow stately Buys Ballot Building (my own workplace!), the waterfall in the botanical gardens, Casa Confetti, and the highly distinctive HU building.
There was plenty to choose from. There are many other buildings (some with award-winning architecture!) that would certainly not have looked out of place on this postcard—for example, the futuristic University Library, the Educatorium, or the bright orange and half-heartedly camouflaged Minnaert Building. Still, I felt this selection offered the best balance.
I also tried to reflect the greenery, with a starring role for the (relatively HUGE) sheep.
You can find the set (instructions/part list/sticker sheet) at my webshop.
